The
joint-stock company Tanin from Sevnica is a factory with a
tradition of over 80 years. We produce tannin-based extracts,
mostly from chestnut wood. The purpose of tannin-based extracts
is not well known because their main applicability is in leather
and ceramic industry, winegrowing, and veterinary medicine.
We export most of our products, and we have buyers all over
the world. Beside being manufactured in our factory, chestnut
timber can also be used for walking sticks, telephone and other
electric poles, and poles in vineyards and in orchards.
However, we must not forget the blooming and the honey picked by our bees.
And when we feel the smell of roasted chestnuts, we realize the autumn
has come. People enjoy it, but its fruit is also enjoyed by game, and many
farmers feed their animals with it. Chestnut wood is not useful for warming
as its caloricity is small, and it causes damage in chimneys. Its applicability
is limited to building, and furniture industry because of its often cracking
(in the direction of annual rings). |

We
must preserve our chestnut forests because of their wide-range
usage. Two diseases are attacking them; ink disease (caused
by Phytophtora cambinora), and chestnut blight (Cryphonectria
parasitica). The chestnut blight is very aggressive and has
caused extinction of this tree species. There are only a few
people who know a lot about how to limit it, so we contacted
forestry experts who recommend all the trees that had not managed
to preserve from the illness to be cut down and removed from
the forest as soon as possible. The estimation is given by
a district forester.
New, healthy sprouts will grow out of the cut stump and chestnut forests
can be preserved.
